Tunisia – The national production of olive oil is expected to reach this season a quantity varying between 260 and 280 thousand tonnes, that is a 160% rise compared to the past season, announced the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, noting that the governorates of Sahel, Sfax, Sidi Bouzid and Kairouan account for 71% of the national production.
The ministry said in a press release Tuesday that olive harvesting and processing campaign had began in the first week of November in most parts of the country and reached a rate of progress of 15% at the end of November.
It is worth pointing out that the Gremda market in Sfax opened on November 5, 2017 and recorded a daily supply of around 150 tonnes, compared to 63 tonnes in the same period last season.
The overall quantity of olive sold in this market reached about 5,473.6 tonnes, 2/3 of which come from Sfax.
The number of oil mills that were operational till the end of November 2017 amounted to 786 against 507 last year, according to the same source.
