Registrar of landed property Wadi Rhouma said on Friday that foreign investors are allowed to buy housing in foreign currency, when creating their investment projects in Tunisia, except for social housing and farmland.

He said during a meeting with the press held Friday in Tunis that several authorisations were canceled such as that of the governors, adding that this process is legal and aims to promote investment in our country.

Rhouma further said that the Land Court has annulled, in this context, all the decisions of the Directorate of Landed Property concerning the refusal of registration of land acquired by the Maghreb nationals and applied the agreements on real estate in accordance with the law of 2016.

The Tunisian legislator has imposed, since independence, restrictions on foreigners’ access to land ownership in Tunisia. The law of May 12, 1964 prohibited foreigners from gaining access to agricultural land ownership and subjecting the ownership of non-agricultural land to the authorisation of governors.
