Tourism receipts rose 38 percent in Tunisian dinar in the first five months of 2018, compared with the same period last year.

These receipts reached 876.2 million dinars, until May 20, 2018. Their increase is of the order of 32% in dollar and 16% in euro, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Salma Elloumi Rekik said at a meeting at the headquarters of the governorate of Monastir.

“These indicators reflect the recovery of tourism activity, especially for the European markets, with the arrival of 2 million 500 thousand tourists from the beginning of this year, until May 2018, up 21% compared to 2017 (same period) and 2.5% compared to 2010,” she pointed out.

The number of French tourists has increased by 40% while that of Algerians has increased by 15%, with a goal of reaching 3 million Algerian tourists in 2018 and 8 million tourists, in total, for the whole year.

Nearly 103 thousand tourists visited the Monastir region in the first 5 months.

The region recorded 700 thousand overnight stays during this period, i.e. up 45%.

The Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts has decided to tighten security in beaches and tourist sites and increase the number of security officers and customs officers at airports.
