The Mauritanian component of the Regional Project Supporting the Irrigation Initiative in the Sahel was launched on Tuesday in Boghe (320 kilometers south of Nouakchott. The project will contribute to efforts in agricultural diversification, increased production and improved competitiveness, said Mauritanian Minister of Agriculture, Lemine Mint El Ghotob Ould Moma.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, she said the Sahel initiative would also strengthen efforts to combat poverty and malnutrition, and promote food security and sustainable growth of the agricultural sector as a whole.
Clement Ouedraogo, the representative of the Executive Secretary of the Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), recalled that the Dakar forum in 2013 was the starting point for the irrigation agenda in the Sahel region.
He added that Mauritania had shown its seriousness and purpose to develop and modernize its agricultural sector, considering that its strategy in this area serves as a reference in that it was the first country to have implemented the project relating to the irrigation initiative.
According to Mr. Ouedraogo, Mauritania is now in a pioneering position that will allow it to play a leading role in the evolution of the project in other countries involved.
