The quantities of dates exported during this season reached, until August 15, 2018, about 123,700 tons, draining revenues worth 722 million dinars (MD) that is up 16.9% in quantity and 33.2% in value, compared with the same period last year.
Sales director of the Interprofessional Fruit Group (GIFruits) Samir Ben Slimane said in a statement to TAP, that this increase is due to the improvement in the exports’ pace notably to the United States (123%), Spain (45.8%) and the Netherlands (20%), in addition to the conquest of six new markets in the current season, ensuring the presence of Tunisian dates in 84 countries. Among these new markets, he cited Nigeria, Cameroon and Gambia.
Tunisia currently has 6 million palm trees producing 62% of the variety “deglet nour” and 38% of other varieties and the average production reached in the last decade 201 thousand tons.
The dates sector ranks 2nd in terms of Tunisian agricultural exports after olive oil.
